Dallas Police Seek to Shut Down Church Known as a Late Night Rave

Dallas City Attorney’s Office files nuisance lawsuit today alleging "church" at 3027 W. Northwest Highway is drug infested after-hours dance club.
Manager accused of supplying drugs to and sexually exploiting minors at the club, arrested.

(DALLAS, TX - JULY 20, 2011) The City Attorney’s Office filed suit today in Dallas County District Court against Glen Hudson, owner of the establishment known as Darkside, located at 3027 W. Northwest Highway. Mr. Hudson had claimed in a letter to the City that he was an ordained minister of the Universal Life Church - an online organization that provides free and instant "ordination" to anyone who visits its website – and that his establishment was a religious organization, exempt from the City's land use regulations.

The City’s investigation disclosed that the location was actually operating as an after-hours dance club catering to a young patronage where illegal drugs were openly sold and used. Hudson's manager, Thomas Eppelsheimer, also known as Tommy Gunn, was arrested Monday in relation to allegations that he supplied drugs to minor females at the club. He was also charged with indecency with a child in the same case and is currently being held in Lew Sterrett jail on $75,000 bond.

If you can’t it to RAND’s presentation in California  in September ,  you can hear RAND’s report in WASHINGTON  DC next Tuesday.
Will  MARY CATHERINE KELLY be invited to speak about RAND’s internal  9/11 moral policymaking ?
Program
In the ten years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, America has been humbled, hopeful, torn, driven, and inspired. In a new book, The Long Shadow of 9/11: America's Response to Terrorism, a selection of RAND's leading experts offers a distinctively farsighted perspective to the national dialogue on 9/11's legacy. Their insights assess the military, political, fiscal, social, cultural, psychological, and even moral implications of U.S. policymaking since 9/11.
About the Speakers
*Brian Michael Jenkins, senior adviser to the president of RAND, initiated RAND's research on terrorism in 1972. In anticipation of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, Jenkins spearheaded the RAND effort to take stock of America's policy reactions and give thoughtful consideration to future strategy. That effort is presented in a new book, The Long Shadow of 9/11: America's Response to Terrorism.
*James Dobbins is director of the RAND International Security and Defense Policy Center. Ambassador Dobbins has held numerous State Department and White House posts including Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, Special Assistant to the President, and Special Adviser to the President and Secretary of State for the Balkans. In the wake of 9/11, he was named representative to the Afghan opposition with the task of putting together and installing a successor to the Taliban regime. He represented the United States at the Bonn Conference that established the new Afghan government, and, on December 16, 2001, raised the flag over the newly reopened U.S. Embassy.
*Brian Jackson is a senior physical scientist at RAND whose research focuses on homeland security and terrorism preparedness. His areas of examination have included terrorist organizational behavior, use of technology by terrorist organizations, threat analysis, emergency preparedness, incident management in large-scale emergency response operations, the equipment and technology needs of emergency responders, and the design of preparedness exercises.
*Anne Gearan (moderator) is the national security editor for the Associated Press. She became the chief Pentagon correspondent for the AP following the 2008 presidential election and was previously the chief diplomatic correspondent, based at the State Department. She covered U.S. foreign policy and traveled with the secretary of state from 2004 to 2009. Gearan has also covered the White House and served as AP's chief Supreme Court and legal affairs writer. She covered the 2000 recount in Florida. Gearan was born in Rochester, New York, the daughter of two newspaper reporters.

Yahoo’s Q2: Revenue Down 5 Percent To $1.08B; Net Income Up 11 Percent

Yahoo’s Q2: Revenue Down 5 Percent To $1.08B; Net Income Up 11 Percent: "

Yahoo just reported second quarter earnings today. The company reported that GAAP revenue(excluding traffic acquisition costs) was $1.08 billion for the second quarter of 2011, a 5 percent decrease from the second quarter of 2010. Yahoo says that this decrease was primarily due to the change in revenue from the Search Agreement and the associated revenue share with Microsoft.

But net earnings per diluted share increased 18 percent to $0.18 in the second quarter of 2011, compared to $0.15 in the second quarter of 2010. Net Income came in at $237 million, which is up 11 percent from the same quarter in 2010. Analysts expected $0.18 per share and $1.1 billion in revenue in the second quarter.

Revenue of $1.2 billion for the second quarter, down 23 percent from $1.6 billion in the second quarter of 2010. Yahoo says that this decrease was primarily due to the change in revenue from the Search Agreement and the associated revenue share with Microsoft. Income from operations increased 9 percent to $191 million in the second quarter of 2011, compared to $175 million in the second quarter of 2010.

Excluding the impact of Microsoft revenue share, the impact of the divestiture of HotJobs, broadband deferred revenue amortization, and certain fee rate reductions, revenue for the second quarter of 2011 decreased 9 percent compared to the second quarter of 2010.

From the release: Yahoo’s results for the second quarter of 2011 reflect $55 million in search operating cost reimbursements and $12 million in transition cost reimbursements from Microsoft under the Search Agreement, which amounts are equal to the search operating costs and the transition costs incurred by Yahoo! in the second quarter. Transition cost reimbursements are subject to a $150 million cap, and through the second quarter aggregate transition costs of $146 million had been incurred.

Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz said this in a statement: “For the quarter, earnings per share was up by 18% year over year. We made clear progress in search, and saw strong growth in engagement on our media properties…We experienced softness in display revenue in the second half of the quarter due to comprehensive changes we have made in our sales organization to position ourselves for more rapid display growth in the future.”

Other notes from the earnings release:

Display revenue ex-TAC increased 5 percent to $467 million, compared to $445 million for the second quarter of 2010. Search revenue ex-TAC was $371 million, a 15 percent decrease compared to $438 million for the second quarter of 2010. Cash flow from operating activities for the second quarter of 2011 was $331 million, a 5 percent decrease compared to $347 million for the same period of 2010. Free cash flow was $96 million for the second quarter of 2011, a 25 percent decrease compared to $127 million for the same period of 2010.

News Corp board shocked at evidence of payments to police

News Corp board shocked at evidence of payments to police, says former DPP: "
Lord Macdonald tells committee it took him 'three to five minutes' to decide NoW emails had to be passed to police
'Blindingly obvious' evidence of corrupt payments to police officers was found by the former director of public prosecutions, Lord Macdonald, when he inspected News of the World emails, the home affairs select committee was told.
Explaining how he had been called in by solicitors acting for Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation board, Lord Macdonald said that when he inspected the messages it took him between 'three to five minutes' to decide that the material had to be passed to police.
'The material I saw was so blindingly obvious that trying to argue that it should not be given to the police would have been a hard task. It was evidence of serious criminal offences.'
He first showed it to the News Corp board in June this year. 'There was no dissent,' he recalled. 'They were stunned. They were shocked. I said it was my unequivocal advice that it should be handed to the police. They accepted that.'
That board meeting, the former DPP said, was chaired by Rupert Murdoch.
Lord Macdonald shortly afterwards gave the material to Assistant Commissioner Cressida Dick at the Metropolitan police. The nine or 10 emails passed over led to the launch of Operation Elveden, the police investigation into corrupt payments to officers for information.
Lord Macdonald, who had been in charge of the Crown Prosecution Service when the phone-hacking prosecution of the NoW's royal correspondent took place, said he had only been alerted to the case due to the convention that the DPP is always notified of crimes involving the royal family.
Members of the committee were highly critical of the CPS's narrow definition of what constituted phone hacking, claiming that it was at odds with the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act.
Mark Reckless, the Conservative MP for Rochester, said that the original police investigation was hindered by the advice from the CPS that phone hacking was only an offence if messages had been intercepted before they were listened to by the intended recipient. However, Reckless said, a clause in the RIPA makes it an offence to hack in to messages even if they have already been heard.
Keir Starmer, the current DPP, said that the police had been told that 'the RIPA legislation was untested'. Listening to messages before they had been heard by the intended recipient was illegal, the police were told, but the question of whether intercepting them afterwards constituted a crime was 'untested', he said.
Mark Lewis, the solicitor who has followed the scandal since its start, said he was the first person to lose his job over the affair when the firm in which he was a partner said it no longer wished him to pursue other victims' claims.
Lewis also told MPs that he had been threatened by lawyers acting for John Yates, the former assistant commissioner at the Metropolitan police, because of comments he had made about phone hacking.
"I have copies of a letter from Carter Ruck [solicitors] threatening to sue me on behalf of John Yates," Lewis told the home affairs select committee. He said the Guardian and the Labour MP Chris Bryant had also received threats of being sued. "The costs of the action were paid for by the Metropolitan Police, by the taxpayer," he added.
Lewis said the reason for the investigation taking so long was not due solely to the police. "The DPP seems to have got it wrong and needs to be helped out," he said.

Dallas First 48 Watch : CM Dwaine Caraway's darling gambling spot caught up in murder investigation

When I first heard an officer on the scanner ask for help at Estelle Village Apartments early Friday morning, I thought it was a normal call. After further investigations this call took us all the way back to the same Poker House that Councilman Dwaine Caraway proudly and boldly defended. Back to Estelle Village, a body was found in the trunk of a car, which was the 911 call I heard on the scanner that night. The man was identified as 38 year-old Alton Marshall, of Dallas.

On Thursday night, Mr. Marshall's wife called police after he hadn't returned home from a house located at 3116 S . Harwood, the same exact gambling house Councilmember Dwaine Caraway was previously in(not sure if he was there at this time). The police report stated that witness' stories from the house were all conflicting.

One woman came forward and claimed she saw two men approach him at approximately 4:15 a.m. as he approached his vehicle, with one flashing a gun and putting it to his head. One suspect stated, " Nigga, don't make me kill you". Mr. Marshall was forced into the drivers seat of his vehicle and the suspects also jumped in, leaving in an unknown direction. Which leads us back to his body later being found in his trunk in Estelle Village Apartments, also known as "The Pinks".

The Pinks are infamous for murders, gangs, drugs, prostitution, robberies, and other poverty driven activities. It is in an area of Dallas, which would have a direct impact from the Inland Port deal being pushed through. But of course certain individuals are under FBI investigations for hindering economic growth because of personal interests. My point being, this is normal behavior in this community because a lack of economic equality south of the Trinity. Mix that with gambling and this is your final recipe, even though I suspect this may turn out to be more than we could ever imagine. Stay tuned. We will keep you updated .

In the ten years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, America has been humbled, hopeful, torn, driven, and inspired. At this program, Brian Michael Jenkins — considered by many to be the "dean of terrorism research" and the coeditor of RAND's forthcoming report, The Long Shadow of 9/11: America's Response to Terrorism — will explore some of the most significant political, fiscal, social, cultural, psychological, and military implications of U.S. policymaking since 9/11.

About the Speaker

Brian Michael Jenkins, senior adviser to the president of RAND, initiated RAND's research on terrorism in 1972. A prolific writer and commentator, he is one of the nation's foremost experts on terrorism, and the author of Will Terrorists Go Nuclear? (2008, Prometheus Books) and the forthcoming Stray Dogs and Virtual Armies: Radicalization and Recruitment to Jihadist Terrorism in the United States Since 9/11 (September 2011, RAND Corporation). In anticipation of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, Jenkins spearheaded the RAND effort to take stock of America's policy reactions and give thoughtful consideration to future strategy.
