Program

In the ten years since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, America has been humbled, hopeful, torn, driven, and inspired. In a new book, The Long Shadow of 9/11: America's Response to Terrorism, a selection of RAND's leading experts offers a distinctively farsighted perspective to the national dialogue on 9/11's legacy. Their insights assess the military, political, fiscal, social, cultural, psychological, and even moral implications of U.S. policymaking since 9/11.

About the Speakers

*	Brian Michael Jenkins, senior adviser to the president of RAND, initiated RAND's research on terrorism in 1972. In anticipation of the 10-year anniversary of 9/11, Jenkins spearheaded the RAND effort to take stock of America's policy reactions and give thoughtful consideration to future strategy. That effort is presented in a new book, The Long Shadow of 9/11: America's Response to Terrorism.
*	James Dobbins is director of the RAND International Security and Defense Policy Center. Ambassador Dobbins has held numerous State Department and White House posts including Assistant Secretary of State for Europe, Special Assistant to the President, and Special Adviser to the President and Secretary of State for the Balkans. In the wake of 9/11, he was named representative to the Afghan opposition with the task of putting together and installing a successor to the Taliban regime. He represented the United States at the Bonn Conference that established the new Afghan government, and, on December 16, 2001, raised the flag over the newly reopened U.S. Embassy.
*	Brian Jackson is a senior physical scientist at RAND whose research focuses on homeland security and terrorism preparedness. His areas of examination have included terrorist organizational behavior, use of technology by terrorist organizations, threat analysis, emergency preparedness, incident management in large-scale emergency response operations, the equipment and technology needs of emergency responders, and the design of preparedness exercises.
*	Anne Gearan (moderator) is the national security editor for the Associated Press. She became the chief Pentagon correspondent for the AP following the 2008 presidential election and was previously the chief diplomatic correspondent, based at the State Department. She covered U.S. foreign policy and traveled with the secretary of state from 2004 to 2009. Gearan has also covered the White House and served as AP's chief Supreme Court and legal affairs writer. She covered the 2000 recount in Florida. Gearan was born in Rochester, New York, the daughter of two newspaper reporters.
