Fed's looking into cutting the SNAP program; Chaos in the black community would ensue.5/7/11

Cut the food stamps and see if America does not descend into a state of chaos. You think they robbing now? If you cut them, what options do we have from the private sector to cover this lost in funding because the local food bank can't handle all these starving people now? I also believe that in some counties in Texas they will only help you once every so often(food banks and charitable organizations).
Policy makers should take into consideration that this would have a direct impact on crime and the stability of the poor neighborhoods. Organizations or someone will have to cover the slack or the hood descends into anarchy fast

Feds May Cut Funding to SNAP Program: MyFoxAUS

***************************************

The U.S. Department of Agriculture finances the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program -- formerly known as the food stamp program. Although the USDA funds SNAP, each state administers the program on the county level. Applications for the Dallas SNAP program are processed through the Texas Human and Social Service Commission in Dallas County. Monthly benefits are deposited onto a debit card that can be used to buy food at most grocery stores and some convenience stores.

Instructions

    • 1
Verify that you're eligible for SNAP. Generally, you must meet income and resource tests to receive benefits. You can use an online benefit estimator (see Resources) to quickly see if you qualify for the Texas SNAP program, or dial 2-1-1 from your Dallas phone to check your eligibility.
    • 2
Complete an application in person, online or by phone. You can apply in person by completing a paper application and providing it to any Dallas office that processes food stamp applications (see Resources). You can apply online through the My Texas Benefits website, or you can apply by phone by dialing 2-1-1.
    • 3
Gather documents to support items claimed in your application. You'll need to prove your income, identity, expenses and resources -- such as balances in bank accounts. If you have a child, you'll need to provide a copy of his birth certificate.
    • 4
Provide support documents. If you apply in person, take copies of your documents with you to your food stamp appointment. If you apply online or by phone, you'll have to fax or mail copies of your documents to complete your application. You will be notified of the documents that need to be sent and the contactinformation of where to send the items when you finish your electronic or phone application.
  • Tips & Warnings
  • If you're between ages 18 and 50 and do not have any children at home, you normally can receive Texas SNAP for only three months in a three-year period unless you work more than 20 hours per week, participate in a work training program or are disabled or pregnant.
