On the morning of September 11, 2001, Mary Catherine Kelly, a national security policy analyst, left home not knowing within 3 short hours her life would be turned upside down. Her professional and personal lives would never be the same. While watching the morning events unfold in New York City on the television in her Pentagon office, Mary Catherine’s immediate supervisor informed the office that they would go into high security emergency mode as soon as Mary Catherine and Bonnie returned from their meeting about how to protect and defend military installations in the event of either a terrorist attack (man-made) or natural disaster . More than likely most of Mary Catherine’s immediate Pentagon colleagues would not be going home within the next 24 hours.

Within minutes of Mary Catherine’s meeting starting, things began to happen on the E-Ring . Moments later debris began to fall from the conference room’s ceiling. Bonnie and Mary Catherine knew that they would have to make several calculated decisions if they were to survive. They narrowly escaped from the collapsing conference room located on the Pentagon’s E-Ring between Corridors 4 and 5. Mary Catherine never looked back to the conference room once her feet touched the floor of E-Ring’s hallway. Her only possible path to safety was to her left then right – Corridor 5. To this day, individuals familiar with the configuration of the Pentagon cannot fathom how Mary Catherine and her colleagues lived to even flee from that conference room. Others not located in ground zero at the Pentagon on September 11^th have described some of those first few moments as if a crane quickly hoisted the entire building and suddenly cut the crane’s tethers. Neither her colleagues nor Mary Catherine was wearing any protective gear as either a soldier, policeman, or recuse worker would wear on the battlefield, on patrol or in a hazardous environment.

Since the events at the Pentagon on the morning of September 11, 2001, Kelly admits that she has witnessed the best and worse sides of humanity. After being diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD or PTS) by her employer’s and personal physicians on the evening of September 11^th , Mary Catherine’s highly respected employer formally notified her that she could immediately start to look for new employment opportunities.

As the 10^th anniversary of 9/11 approaches, Mary Catherine’s renowned employer continues to be credited nationally and internationally for research and analysis reports concerning the invisible wounds of man-made (including military conflicts) and natural disasters (post traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury). However behind closed doors, this same esteemed institution with more than 1,500 employees and revenues of more than $200 million dollars, brazenly denies Mary Catherine’s identical invisible wounds . She is the employer’s sole 9/11 employee/victim located in ground zero at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Upper management located in California never contacted her immediate family or Mary Catherine. They ignored her.

Internal communications written by the company’s President and Vice-President between September 11 and 15, 2001 acknowledged that an employee had hit by debris but never referred to Mary Catherine by name. Nor did their communications disclose that she was located in ground zero at the Pentagon. Yet this distinguished government contractor offered on-site individual and group counseling sessions to employees who either witnessed the events unfolding at the Pentagon from their office windows in a nearby building; experienced problems coping with the events of 9/11 as they unraveled on the television; felt the concussions in their offices located a blocks from the Pentagon; or knew 9/11 victims in either New York City, Shanksville, PA or Washington DC.

None of those employees lost their jobs like Mary Catherine. To the best of her knowledge, Mary Catherine was the only employee in the Pentagon’s E –Ring, diagnosed with PTSD, and informed by her government contractor employer that she could start to look for new career opportunities within 15 days of September 11, 2001.

Until recently (less than 9 years ago) many insurance companies, physicians and employers diagnoses the causes as PTSD as genetic ( a predisposition). Being diagnosed with PTSD was and remains a stigma. The insurance companies investigated every aspect of Mary Catherine’s life to justify why she didn’t suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) as a result being located in ground zero at the Pentagon. And in the alternative, if she did suffer from PTSD, the employer’s insurance company continues to argue that her medical conditions was not caused by her location on the E-Ring and force of things penetrating the Pentagon’s west façade.

· Mary Catherine continues to pay for her colleagues’ medical care who were not located in any ground zero location (New York, District of Columbia, Pennsylvania) and maintained their coveted jobs with the government contractor. She did not receive similar benefits as those military personnel or civilian employees assigned to work in the Pentagon.

· Since 2001 this same renown and respected government contractor has published numerous extensive studies regarding the invisible wounds sustained by victims of both man-made and natural disasters.

· The government contractor’s liquidated insurance company and attorneys now have segregated Mary Catherine’s case into financial and legal jurisdictions without citing any legal authority and notification to the jurisdiction where they have removed funds for Mary Catherine’s reimbursements .

Initially, the employer’s insurance representatives transferred funds stating that they would be used to reimburse Mary Catherine for her out of pocket expenses pursuant to a lifetime medical benefits award. Within days of transferring the funds, representatives of the insurance company officially notified the workers’ compensation commission that it would not reimburse Mary Catherine’s out of pocket medical expenses.

· Her former attorney after more than 9 years refuses to relinquish all of Mary Catherine’s case files so that she can find new counsel. The attorney also cannot document the location of Mary Catherine’s 9/11 mortuary bag given to him for safe keeping. The mortuary bag documents Kelly’s office assignment at the Pentagon between the D and E Rings on Corridor 5.

In the coming weeks, we will describe Mary Catherine’s life after September 11, 2001 and how institutions do not always practice what they preach. These investigative reports will raise our national consciousness about what can happen when we assume the depth of corruption and deception (SMOKING MIRRORS) often extending from the highest levels of government, government advisors/contractors to the local workers’ compensation boards and charities.
